How To Make Your Whole House Glow With Light
It is often the case that people have lovely big homes but are not happy with the amount of light that they get in them. In fact, people with larger homes frequently have more of a problem due to having longer deeper rooms and also areas in the middle of the house that are some way from windows. There are some options available to increase the light in your home, including adding widows, buying white dining room furniture, knocking through walls and even using putting light tunnels in the chimney. However, most of these methods are very costly and time consuming and there are far easier ways to brighten up your life.
Mirrors. It is such an easy technique to use and yet lots of people don’t even consider just how good mirrors are at enhancing light. This is really down to the fact that almost all light that hits them is recycled and bounced back to other areas. The best way to use them is place mirrors on walls in just the right place to send incoming light from windows, back out the door to other areas. By locating a mirror just outside the door, the light can then be picked up and moved on down the hall or into other rooms or areas of the house. Repeat this as necessary throughout the house and it’ll be like having a hundred extra lights around. It’s particularly useful when you have lots of bedroom furniture cluttering up a room, and not much light to start with.
Glass. If you want to disperse light around a room rather than have it concentrated in one area then use glass. Using wine glasses on shelves and even glass vases on bedside tables which refract light and send it out at all angles giving an all over glow. Make sure you don’t overdo the glassware however because you can sometimes end up ‘trapping the light’ within all the glass.
Combine. For the ultimate light manipulation, try using both the techniques described above in combination. Use mirrors to direct light through glass objects and then smaller mirrors to pick up the refracted light and move it on. In fact you’ll be so taken aback by the extra light you can have in your home for such a small cost that you’ll be wanting to optimise family and friends houses as well.
